Atlantic City casinos could introduce handheld gambling devices
Casinos in Atlantic City could look to introduce handheld gambling devices in the future that would enable guests to bet and gamble even when they are not at the tables and machines.
State Senator Jim Whelan, a former mayor for Atlantic City, has proposed a bill that would allow casinos within New Jersey to offer handheld gambling devices to its players to allow them to bet away from the tables and machines at the casino. A Senate committee has been scheduled to discuss the bill this week.
Senator Whelan has stated that he feels the bill would allow casinos to offer something for a new generation that has grown up using smart phones and innovative mobile technology in a move that intends to maximise income revenue streams for Atlantic City casinos.
The technology that would be used to work the handheld devices would ensure that the handheld devices would not work if they were taken off the premises of the casinos.
The handheld devices are already available for use in casinos in Nevada where they have been present since 2006. However, they are only allowed to be used in public areas and could not be used in hotel rooms to ensure underage players could not gamble.
Senator Whelan said "It's a way of adapting to a generation of young adults who were weaned on smart phones and iPads.”
The Casino Association of New Jersey also backed the bill saying "This innovation would provide an additional amenity to help Atlantic City further distinguish itself as the East Coast's premier gaming destination.”
The handheld devices would be controlled and owned by the casinos. They would only be handed out to players at the casino that had pre-paid accounts with the casino. The player would be the only individual that would be allowed to place a bet and receive any payment won from any bets placed.
