Barack Obama’s administration confirmed this week that they were returning over $200,000 in funds that were collected by members of the family linked with a Mexican casino owner that fled the US after a drug scandal.

The casino owner in question, Juan Jose Rojas Cardona, missed bail in 1994 in Iowa after being charged for drug and fraud offences. It is believed he fled to Mexico to avoid jail time and has not been seen since he escaped the US.

The $200,000 being returned by the Obama administration had been collected by the brothers of Cardona, Carlos Cardona and Alberto Rojas Cardona, who had started raising funds for the Obama re-election campaign last year at the Democratic National Committee. The brothers are based in Chicago and there is no confirmed evidence that they have had any contact with their fugitive brother since he fled the US.

However, the Obama administration asked a number of questions about how the money had been collected and it was a decision based on these questions that forced the Obama administration to act as they have.

Ben LaBolt, spokesman for the Obama administration, said "On the basis of the questions that have been raised, we will return the contributions from these individuals and from any other donors they brought to the campaign.”

The Obama Administration was also investigating a further $100,000 donated by individuals linked with the Cardona family and confirmed that it was likely these funds would be returned as well.
