European roulette explained

European and American roulette are the two big variations of playing roulette, whether it be online or in casinos. Each casino will usually have both an American and a European roulette wheel. The majority of the rules stay the same, but the look of the roulette wheels and the behaviour expected in a game of European roulette differs.

How European Roulette is different

European roulette was the first form of roulette developed in the long history of roulette’s worldwide popularity. The original roulette wheels created in Germany are the single zero roulette wheels, commonly found all over the rest of the world, minus America. American roulette differs in that the double zero roulette wheel is used.

By using the single zero roulette wheel the odds are in the favour of the player against the House in European roulette. The house edge is only around 2 to 3% in comparison to American roulette which is double the percentage for house advantage. Because the single zero roulette wheel is used, aesthetically the table and wheel used differs. Whereas the American roulette wheel has 38 compartments, the European roulette wheel only has 37 compartments.

As well as this, the roulette wheel is placed in the middle of the table, rather than at the head of the table like American roulette. European roulette also splits the betting board across each side of the table for ‘inside bets’ and obviously does not incorporate 00 as a possible bet.

The single zero roulette, European roulette wheels also have the numbers laid out randomly rather than systematically paired like the double zero, American roulette wheels.

European Roulette in Casinos
The biggest difference when playing European roulette in casinos is the chips used. European roulette uses cash amounts and the same coloured chips, rather than a variety of coloured chips like its American counterpart, that lets each player choose a colour and value the chips at whichever cash amount they choose.

A rake is also used to rewards winnings, place bets and collect losings from players, rather than by hand, which is common in American casinos. This slows down game play significantly but also means that cash amounts are less likely to cause confusion, as they are stated clearly on each chip.

European roulette also has an added rule that American casinos do not have the advantage of. This is offered in some casinos, but not all. It is the ‘la partage’ rule and allows players (who place an ‘outside bet’) the chance to recover half of their bet if the ball lands on the single zero. This reduces the house advantage once again and increases the players advantage. It is almost an insurance for your bet that you will not lose the entirety of the bet.
